58% of Google searches now end without anyone clicking a single link.
Not because people stopped looking for answers. Because the answers started showing up before the links did. Google's own AI Overviews serve a written answer right at the top of the page, and more than half the time, nobody scrolls past it.
But here's the bigger number. ChatGPT passed 900 million weekly users this year. Perplexity hit 230 million monthly. Google's AI Overviews reach 2 billion people across 200 countries. And none of those AI answers work the way Google used to work.
When someone types "best franchise consulting firm for first-time buyers" into ChatGPT, it doesn't show ten blue links. It gives one answer. Maybe two. And it cites its source.
That source is either your website or your competitor's. There is no page two.
This is AEO. Answer Engine Optimization. And it's the reason I spent all of last week building a writing machine for FranchiseFinePrint.com instead of doing "regular SEO."
Today you're getting the whole story. What AEO is and why it matters. How our AEO Writer skill works (the one we built for the Zero Human Company). And why our next issue might be the most valuable thing I've published all month.
Coffee up. Let's go.
What AEO Actually Is
SEO is Search Engine Optimization. You optimize your pages so Google ranks you higher. You've heard of SEO. Everyone has.
AEO is Answer Engine Optimization. You optimize your pages so AI models CITE you when someone asks a question.
Think about the difference. When your customer Googles something, they see a list of results and CHOOSE which one to click. You're competing for attention against nine other results on the page.
When your customer asks ChatGPT the same question, the AI reads hundreds of pages, picks the best answer, and delivers it with a source link. You're not competing for attention. You're competing to BE the answer.
Here's why that matters in dollars: visitors who arrive from AI search convert at 14.2%. Visitors from regular Google convert at 2.8%. Five times the conversion rate. Because these aren't browsers. They already told the AI exactly what they want. The AI matched them to you. They show up ready to buy.
And AI referral traffic grew 796% year over year. The people arriving through this channel are multiplying fast, they're converting at five times the rate, and 78% of your competitors aren't even tracking it yet.
Why This Just Became Urgent
Two years ago you could ignore AEO. Right now, ignoring it is expensive.
Google's AI Overviews correlate with a 34.5% drop in click-through rates for top-ranking results. If you ranked #1 on Google last year, your clicks may have dropped by a third and you didn't change a thing on your website.
Small publishers got crushed hardest. Chartbeat's data shows small publishers lost 60% of their search traffic over two years. Large publishers lost 22%. The difference? Large publishers had structured, authoritative content that AI models could actually pull from. Small publishers had blog posts that Google's old crawler loved but AI models skip right past.
And it's not just Google anymore. 52% of B2B (business-to-business) buyers now use AI during their buying research. 39% of consumers have used AI for shopping. Those numbers only go one direction.
Here's the window that should get your blood pumping: only 22% of marketers are actively tracking their AI visibility. But 94% of digital leaders plan to increase AEO spending this year. That means the land grab is happening NOW and most of the competition is still asleep.
Remember what I always say. You only need 0.1% of a billion dollar market. In AEO, right now, most of the land is unclaimed.
How AEO Works (The Cheat Sheet)
SEO plays by Google's rules: keywords, backlinks, domain authority. AEO plays by different rules entirely. Here's what the AI models actually look for when they decide which page to cite.
Speed to answer. When an AI scans your page, it needs a clear, direct answer in the first 100 words. Not "in today's competitive landscape." Not three paragraphs of backstory. The answer. SEO pages bury the answer below the fold to keep people scrolling. AEO pages put it in the first sentence because the AI will move on if it can't find one fast.
Structured sections. AI models pull from pages in chunks. Each chunk needs to stand on its own. That means clear H2 headings (the section titles on a web page) that match the exact words people type into AI. Short paragraphs. Clean formatting. If an AI can grab one section of your page and drop it into an answer without needing context from the rest of the page, you built it right.
Proof everywhere. LLMs (Large Language Models, the engines under ChatGPT and Claude) weight pages that provide evidence over pages that make claims. A testimonial with a real name. A case study with real numbers. A statistic with a credible source. You don't pile it all in one section. You distribute proof throughout the entire page, roughly one citable fact every 150 to 200 words.
Prompt variations. People ask the same question ten different ways. "Best franchise consultant" and "top franchise advisory firm" and "franchise buying help" are all the same question wearing different clothes. An AEO page covers every variation with its own section, so the AI has something to cite no matter how the buyer phrases it.
Freshness. Pages that haven't been updated in three months are three times more likely to lose visibility in AI results. Traditional SEO rewarded evergreen content you published and forgot about. AEO rewards content that stays current because AI models prefer fresh sources.
Brand mentions over backlinks. This one surprised me. Research shows that brand mentions across the web correlate three times more strongly with AI visibility than backlinks do. All those years we spent building links? Still useful for Google. But for AI, getting your brand mentioned in forums, articles, and conversations matters more than a link on someone's page.
How We Built an AEO Writing Machine
Now here's where our Zero Human Company story meets AEO.
We've got FranchiseFinePrint.com. The website is live (you watched us build it in our last issue for $33.59). The franchise buying niche is picked. The customer personas are done. The site is standing.
But a website nobody finds is a billboard in the desert.
So I built a Claude skill that turns Claude into an AEO writing machine. A skill is a plain-text instruction file that teaches Claude a repeatable job, like a playbook you'd hand to a new employee except the employee never forgets a step and works at 3am without complaining.
I call it the AEO Writer, and it runs a five-step pipeline.
Step 1: Identify the Core Prompt. You tell Claude the one question you want to own. Not a keyword. A prompt. The exact thing a buyer would type into ChatGPT. For FranchiseFinePrint, one of ours is "how to read a franchise disclosure document." If we own that answer, every franchise buyer who asks an AI that question finds our page.
Step 2: Research. Claude runs six different search patterns to find every page the AI models currently cite for that prompt. It pulls the top competing pages, documents how fast they answer the question, what structure they use, what prompt variations they cover, and most importantly what they MISS. Those gaps are your opportunity. Every winning page has holes, and the AI will happily pull from a second source to fill them.
Step 3: Outline. Before writing a single paragraph, Claude maps an 8-section page skeleton. This is the structure that AI models are proven to pull from, based on the TrioSEO methodology (a system for organizing pages around how both traditional and AI search actually work).
The skeleton:
- The Direct Answer (first 100 words, immediately citable)
- The Proof (case studies, testimonials, numbers)
- The Method (your process, step by step)
- Prompt Variations (one section per way buyers phrase the question)
- Comparison (honest "vs" section if the prompt invites it)
- Audience (who this is for, segmented by role or situation)
- FAQ Block (8-12 thick answers, 75-250 words each, not thin one-liners)
- CTA and Resources (CTA is your Call To Action, the conversion path)
Claude presents this outline and waits for approval. The outline is the skeleton of the house. A bad outline produces a bad page no matter how good the writing is.
Step 4: Write. Claude writes the full draft following nine writing rules baked into the skill. Answer first, expand second. Use exact prompt language in headings. Keep sections independently citable. Distribute proof throughout. Short paragraphs only. Link to authoritative sources. And one citable statistic or source roughly every 150-200 words.
Step 5: Score. This is the quality gate. Claude scores the finished page against a 12-criterion checklist. Did it answer the core prompt in the first 100 words? Are all prompt variations covered with their own H2 sections? Is there proof in every section? Are the FAQs thick enough? Is the word count in range? Does every section stand on its own?
A page that passes 10 out of 12 ships. Anything less goes back for another draft pass on the failing sections.
The entire pipeline takes about 20 minutes of my time. Most of that is reviewing the outline and the final draft. Claude does the rest.
AEO vs SEO (The Honest Matchup)
Let me be direct. AEO is not replacing SEO. They work different rooms at the same party.
SEO gets you ranked on Google for keyword searches. AEO gets you cited by AI for question-based queries. Your ideal setup is BOTH, because Google's top 10 results still account for about 38% of AI Overview citations. Being strong on Google helps your AEO, and being cited by AI drives branded searches back to Google.
The real difference is in what they reward.
SEO rewards keywords, backlinks, domain authority, page speed, and time on page. AEO rewards structured answers, brand mentions, fresh content, distributed proof, and independently citable sections.
A blog post optimized for SEO can be a rambling story that builds to a conclusion. An AEO page leads with the answer and builds support under it. They're built for different engines because they serve different readers.
The businesses that win the next two years will be the ones running both. And right now, almost nobody is doing AEO on purpose. That's your window.
What Happens Next
Here's where September gets really fun.
In our next issue, we connect Claude directly to FranchiseFinePrint.com. Not "Claude writes a page and then I copy-paste it over." Claude logs into the website through the API doorway (a back entrance that lets software talk to your website) we built last week and publishes the pages itself.
And the engine it uses to write those pages? The AEO Writer skill I just walked you through. The next issue includes the actual skill file. You can install it in your own Claude and have the same AEO pipeline running for your business by that night.
AI researches the prompts your buyers are asking. AI writes the page that answers them. AI publishes that page to your website. AI answer engines discover that page and start citing it to your buyers. The whole loop is AI.
That's the Zero Human Company. See you Thursday.
